Wollongong Exposed Aggregate Specialists

Looking for a finish that’s both beautiful and practical? Exposed aggregate delivers on both. By washing away the thin surface layer of concrete before it fully hardens, the natural stones within are revealed, creating a textured, pebbled look that’s hard-wearing and wonderfully slip-resistant. Exposed aggregate in Wollongong is a hugely popular choice for driveways, pool surrounds, paths and patios, especially in our wet coastal climate where grip matters.

You can choose from different stone types, sizes and colours to complement your home and garden, giving you a surface that’s truly one of a kind. It also hides dirt and minor wear better than a plain finish. The timing of the wash-back is critical, so it pays to use an experienced crew. Let’s talk about the right look for your property.

Exposed Aggregate Services Across Wollongong

Aggregate Driveways, Garage to Kerb

Your driveway can be poured in exposed aggregate all the way from the garage slab to the street, giving one continuous finish. Plain or tinted bands along the edges and joints are an optional extra, and they sharpen up the line where the drive meets the footpath.

Alfresco and Entertaining Areas

Off the kitchen or the back deck, a finer stone gives a softer look that sits well under outdoor furniture and the barbie. It works just as well under a roof as it does in the open, and it pairs nicely with decking boards, tiles and garden edging.

Borders and Feature Bands

Strips of smooth or honed concrete around the edge, down the middle or along the joints break up a large expanse of stone and give it a frame. A border can pick up your roof or render colour, and it creates a tidy edge against lawn and garden beds.

Honed Aggregate Finishes

If you want the stone colours without the bumpy texture, we can grind the cured slab back so the stones are sliced through and show their cross-section. A honed aggregate finish works well on covered patios, entries and outdoor rooms where a smoother feel matters.

Paths and Side Access

Carrying the same stone through garden paths, side passages and out to the clothesline makes the whole yard feel connected. Narrow runs between fences and walls are placed and washed by hand, which suits tight access on older blocks.

Strata and Commercial Paving

Unit complexes, shopfronts, car parks and community areas need paving that is tough and still presentable. We sequence the work around residents and customers so there is always a clear way through while each section is poured and cured.

Why us

How We Get Exposed Aggregate Right in Wollongong

Careful Retarder Timing

Once the slab is finished, a surface retarder is sprayed on to hold back the top layer while the concrete below sets. On a warm Illawarra day that window can close fast, so we monitor it closely and wash off the moment the stone comes away cleanly.

Enough Hands on Pour Day

An even exposure right across the slab is essential, because any patchy section is obvious once it dries. We turn up with a crew big enough to wash each area at the right time, so nothing dries out ahead of the rest.

A Mix Built for Exposure

A good result relies on lots of stone close to the surface. We order a mix designed for exposing and check it as it is placed, which stops bald, paste-heavy areas showing up once the aggregate is revealed.

Joints Placed With the Layout

Every slab needs control joints, but they should look deliberate. We line them up with the house, the garage door and your paths, or tuck them inside smooth borders, so the finished surface looks properly designed.

A Base Built to Carry Cars

Beneath the decorative top it is still a driveway. Excavation depth, compaction, reinforcement and slab thickness are set for your ground, be that escarpment shale, sandy soil near the beach or reactive clay, and for the vehicles that will use it.

Neat Edges, Clean Site

Where the slab meets lawn, garden beds or the house, we form straight, crisp edges. Wash-off water and slurry are kept out of your gardens and the stormwater system, and the site is cleaned up before we leave.

FAQs

Exposed Aggregate FAQs

What Wollongong homeowners tend to ask us about exposed aggregate: why it works so well here, what it feels like underfoot, cleaning, how often to reseal and matching new work to old.

It deals with several local headaches in one go. Stones standing slightly proud of the surface give tyres and shoes more traction, which counts on a steep driveway below the escarpment in a downpour, or in shaded corners where algae grows. The texture also disguises dust, leaf litter and tyre marks, so it stays presentable longer between cleans. Sealed properly, it copes well with strong UV, heavy rain and salty sea air. It is dearer than a basic broom finish, but most people decide the appearance and extra grip are worth paying for, particularly where smooth concrete would be slippery in the wet.

It depends on the size of the stone and how far the surface is washed back. Small rounded pebbles with a light exposure are comfortable to walk on, which is why we often suggest them around pools and on patios. Bigger feature stones washed back further give maximum grip but feel coarse, so they belong on the driveway rather than where children run around barefoot. Smooth river pebbles are also gentler than sharp crushed rock of a similar size. Tell us how each area gets used, and we will recommend a stone and exposure for each instead of one spec across the whole property.

For everyday upkeep, a stiff broom and a hose will do most of the work. The surface does trap more dirt than smooth concrete, and in damp, shady places such as under trees, along a side fence or on south-facing areas below the escarpment, mould, moss and algae can move in. Kill the growth with a treatment first, then pressure wash on a medium setting and it usually cleans up nicely. Keep the wand moving rather than holding it close to one spot, otherwise you can dislodge stones and strip the sealer. A deep clean takes some sealer off too, so a reseal afterwards is a good idea.

Along the Illawarra coast, a reseal every three to five years or so is typical, though sun and traffic change that a lot. A driveway that bakes in afternoon sun and has cars on it daily wears its sealer far quicker than a covered path. The signs are easy to spot: the stone loses its depth of colour and turns chalky, and water soaks in instead of beading. Skipping a reseal will not make the concrete weaker, but the surface goes dull, stains stick more readily and mould gets established sooner. Keeping on top of it keeps the finish looking fresh.

Usually we can get close as long as the original stone is still available, so any record of what was used is helpful. Older surfaces are harder, since weathering and a worn sealer dull the stone, which means a new section will look brighter and sharper at first even with identical aggregate. Expect the join to be visible for a year or two until both areas weather together. If matching matters a lot, sealing old and new together at the end helps tie them in. We can also prepare a sample beside your existing surface so you can compare before the pour.
