Your pool is the star of the backyard, so it deserves a deck that looks good and keeps everyone safe. Wet feet and smooth surfaces don’t mix, which is why a quality concrete pool deck in Wollongong needs a slip-resistant finish that’s still comfortable to walk on barefoot.
Cool-to-touch finishes and lighter colours help keep things comfortable on those scorching summer afternoons, while proper falls make sure water drains away from your pool and house. Whether you’re building a new pool or refreshing an old, tired surround, there are loads of styles to choose from, including stamped, exposed aggregate, honed and coloured options. We’ll work around your pool, fencing and landscaping to give you a tidy, long-lasting result. Chat to us about creating the perfect poolside setup.
Pool Deck and Surround Work in Wollongong
Plunge and Courtyard Pool Surrounds
Plunge pools and small courtyard pools suit townhouses and the tighter blocks around Wollongong. With limited room, we plan the surround carefully so there's still space for a lounger, a towel hook and a safe way around the water's edge.
Cast-In Bullnose Coping
Instead of separate coping tiles or pavers, the deck itself can be poured to lip over the pool edge with a rounded nose, all in one piece. It gives an unbroken line from the water to the surround. Foam formers create the shape and are removed once the concrete has set.
Equipment Pads
Your pump, filter, chlorinator and heat pump need a flat, solid home. We pour one where it's tucked away but still easy for a technician to reach, and lift it slightly so the gear stays clear of wet ground, rain puddles, garden mulch and weeds.
Slabs for Cabanas and Shade
Need a break from the sun between dips? We pour the slab for a cabana, gazebo or shade sail next to the pool and set the post footings during the same pour, so the structure is properly held down when a southerly buster or summer storm rolls through.
Paths From the House to the Pool
A solid path from the back door to the pool gate means wet feet aren't carrying grass and sand indoors. We run the same finish as the deck along it, so the pool area feels designed as one rather than bolted on later.
Outdoor Shower Pads
A small graded slab for an outdoor shower near the pool or side gate, falling to a floor waste your plumber connects, is handy after a swim at North Beach or Thirroul. It rinses off the sand and salt before anyone dives into the pool or walks inside.
Planning Your Wollongong Pool Surround
From the first warm days of spring right through to autumn, your pool gets plenty of use, so traction, comfort and drainage matter as much as the look. Getting the deck planned is simple, and any of these three steps is a good place to begin.
- Fill us in on the pool: New build or existing pool? Tell us the shape, the style of coping you're after and where the fence line will go.
- Have us visit the site: We'll check the levels around the water so splash and rainwater drain away from the pool and the house.
- Look at real samples: Put exposed aggregate, broom and stamped finishes side by side, and ask about paler colours that stay kinder to bare feet on a sunny afternoon.
We work comfortably alongside pool builders and fencers, and grip is the first thing we consider in every finish we suggest. The result is a surround that sheds water and feels sure underfoot when you climb out. Get in touch through our contact page for a free quote and get the poolside project moving.
What Pool Owners in Wollongong Get From Us
Slip Ratings Checked First
We don't recommend a finish or sealer until we've seen the supplier's slip test data and confirmed it's rated for wet, barefoot use. Some glossy sealers take a lot of grip away, so we stick with products that let the surface texture keep working.
Rounded Edges for Bare Feet
Kids climbing in and out all day will find every sharp corner on a step, coping or deck edge. We round each exposed arris so knees and toes don't get grazed on hard concrete during a long afternoon in the pool.
Your Pool Stays Clean
Slurry, cutting dust and grinding residue can mark a pool finish and clog the filter. We cover the water and the coping during pouring, cutting and clean-up, and hand your pool back in the same state we found it.
Good Cover Over the Steel
Salt chlorinators and splashed pool chemicals can gradually attack concrete and corrode any reinforcement they reach, and on the coast the sea air adds to it. We keep generous cover over the steel and seal the surface to slow moisture and salt getting in, which helps prevent rust marks and spalling edges later on.
Isolation Joint at the Pool Edge
A pool shell and its surrounding deck don't move in the same way as they heat, cool and settle. We separate them with an isolation joint so each can move independently, which prevents the cracking along the coping line that we're most often asked to fix.
Damp, Shaded Corners Drained
Corners shaded by fences, palms or a cabana stay damp in our humid coastal climate and can grow slippery black mould. We give those areas a decent fall so water clears fast, and suggest a sealer that makes scrubbing them clean much easier.

Pool Deck Questions Answered
What Wollongong pool owners most want to know: which finish grips best, how warm concrete gets, whether an old surround can be resurfaced, drainage and fitting in the pool fence.
Exposed aggregate is the finish most people choose, since the exposed stones hold their grip when wet, feel reasonable on bare feet and hide the scuffs of a busy pool area. A light broom texture costs less and performs nearly as well. Honed and polished concrete look sharp, but if you want one beside a pool, check its slip rating for wet barefoot areas under the relevant Australian Standard first. We won't put smooth steel-trowelled concrete next to a pool at all, because it turns treacherous as soon as it's wet.
It can, and it's far better to plan for that now than to find out on a hot January afternoon. Wollongong summers bring humidity and strong UV, and a dark deck sitting in full sun warms up fast. Colour has the biggest effect. Charcoal and other deep shades soak up heat and can be uncomfortable to stand on barefoot later in the day, whereas pale greys and natural aggregate blends stay much cooler. Texture helps a little as well, since less of your sole is in contact with the surface. If your heart is set on a dark colour, we'll give you an honest idea of how it will feel.
In most cases it is, and around a pool it's frequently the smarter choice, as jackhammering concrete hard up against a finished pool is slow, costly and risks damaging the shell. When the deck is still structurally sound and the issue is worn, stained or sun- and chlorine-affected concrete, or simply an old-fashioned look, a bonded overlay gives you a brand-new surface for a fraction of a rebuild. Where there's movement cracking along the pool edge, usually because the ground underneath has softened or settled, we repair that first, or it will simply reappear through the new topping.
The whole surround is graded to fall away from the coping, and then the water needs a proper path once it reaches the outside edge. It's a basic step that's often handled badly, which lets soil, leaves, lawn clippings and sunscreen wash into the pool and choke the filter. One heavy summer downpour will show up any errors quickly, swimmers or not. Where the yard can't give a clean fall away from the pool, we put in channel drains at the low points and pipe them to an appropriate outlet. Whichever way it goes, the drainage is settled before we pour.
It does, ideally. Pool safety barriers are compulsory in New South Wales, and the NSW requirements reference Australian Standard AS 1926.1. Your council or an accredited pool barrier certifier can tell you exactly what applies to your pool. Fence posts need somewhere to fix, and casting sleeves or brackets into the deck during the pour is far tidier than drilling into new concrete afterwards. Gate locations, swing direction and non-climbable zones can also shape the deck layout. If the fence design is still undecided, we can allow for likely positions, but locking it in early gives the neatest finish.
